St. Olaf Student Health Services
St. Olaf Student Health Services (SOSHS) is located at Northfield Hospital + Clinics' (NH+C) Express Care Clinic location.
- Please identify yourself as a St.Olaf student when you call.
SOSHS can evaluate students for minor illness and injury only. SOSHS does not treat or manage complex or chronic conditions and recommends those students establish care with a local full service provider.
- Video Visits with a healthcare provider who can diagnose, treat, and write prescriptions for common conditions.
- Labs - Students needing labs drawn for their home providers may take outside provider lab orders to the Northfield Hospital laboratory. To avoid out of network charges, students may need to first establish care with a NH+C provider. Students are responsible for checking with insurance before having labs drawn. Call the clinic and we can help you determine how to handle lab work.
- Reproductive care including:
- contraceptive counseling, prescriptions for oral contraceptives, prescription emergency contraception such as Ella. Students may bring in already prescribed single dose Depo provera shots for administration.
- limited sexually transmitted infection screening. STI screening-gonorrhea and chlamydia can be sent out and paid for out of pocket or insurance can be billed.
- HIV screening
- Other STI screening will be billed to insurance or students will be referred to a local clinic.
- Tuberculosis screening by Quantiferon will be referred to a local clinic and insurance will be billed. During the pandemic TB skin tests will not be available.

- Attention Deficit/ADHD evaluations, new ADD medication prescriptions
- Management and Treatment of complex or chronic medical conditions, including eating disorders
- Mole removal/skin biopsy
- Ingrown toenail treatment
- Physicals (including pre ops, travel, and sport)
- Pap tests
- Nasal flu swabs, COVID testing
- Specialist referrals, including Physical Therapy. If a primary care provider is needed, student will need to establish care with a local provider.

What if I think I have COVID-19?
Students who have COVID-19 symptoms or suspect they have contracted the virus will call SOSHS 507-646-6523 during regular business hours. After hours or on weekends, call NH+C's Northfield Clinic at 507-646-1494 or go to NH+C's Emergency Department if an emergency, If they are advised to seek medical care, students should call St. Olaf Public Safety (507-786-3666) to arrange transport in a Safe Ride Van.

How do I make an appointment?
Call SOSHS during clinic hours. They will assist students in navigating the services available and schedule a Video Visit or an in-person appointment if needed. Most appointments with providers will be online through a Video Visit. If a provider recommends that a student be seen in person, they will set up an in-person appointment with the student or refer to a local clinic. Visits with a provider will be by appointment only - no walk in visits will be available.
How does a Video Visit work?
With Video Visits, you can have a face-to-face appointment with your provider, discuss your concerns, get answers and a care plan tailored to you. You get the same personalized care you trust now, in the comfort of your own dorm or apartment. How does an in-person appointment work?
In-person appointments, that are not COVID-19 related, will take place at NH+C's Express Care Clinic located at 706 Division St. All students must wear a face mask and will be screened at the door for fever, respiratory illness, and COVID-19 symptoms.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes. In-person visits or Video Visits with a provider will be by appointment only. No drop in visits will be available. Please CALL the clinic and tell us what’s happening with you, and we will help determine if you need to be seen.
What about after hours or weekends?
After hours or weekends, call your clinic and talk with the after-hours nurse. If an emergency, go to NH+C's Emergency Department.
What if I have a respiratory illness?
All respiratory illnesses will be referred to the NH+C Northfield clinic.
What transportation is provided?
St. Olaf is offering a new shuttle service to the SOSHS clinic as well as all other area clinics and pharmacies. The shuttle stops will also be near eye clinics, physical therapy services, and dental offices. COVID-19 transports will be managed through Public Safety via Safe Ride or ambulance transport. What if SOSHS can’t treat me?
Students will be referred to NH+C or another Northfield clinic such as Allina. SOSHS can assist with a referral or help a student schedule an appointment if needed. *Students will need to use insurance for these types of visits.

What will an appointment cost?
During the 2020-2021 academic year, all appointments with a SOSHS provider, whether Video Visit or in person, will be $40.00. This will be charged by NH+C directly to the student, not to insurance. Students will not be charged for brief questions or advice given over the phone. There will be no charge if a student requires blood pressure checks and has orders from a different provider, but the student will still need to schedule an appointment. Calling to find out if you need a Video Visit or an in-person visit will not be charged; only the visit with the provider will be charged.
As in the past, students are required to provide proof of insurance annually to the St. Olaf Student Accounts office. If they are not covered by a plan, they will be assigned to a student insurance plan offered through EIIA, with the cooperation of the college. This process will continue. SOSHS does not manage the Student Health Insurance Plan. For questions about the St. Olaf College Student Health plan, please see the Student Accounts website.

What about my data/health information?
SOSHS office will continue to collect students’ health information, including immunization records.
Students will continue to have access to their medical records via the Medicat portal. We expect to transition to the NH+C’s medical record system for the 2021-2022 academic year and are discussing how to do so efficiently while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
Other Local Health Services
Students may work with any of the local pharmacies. Most are accessible by student transportation.
- Prescriptions from home providers can be transferred to local pharmacies.
- Controlled substance prescriptions from home or local providers can be sent to Walgreens or CVS (located at the local Target store), which are national pharmacies. Walgreens is located on the clinics shuttle route and CVS/Target is located on the Express Bus route. Students will have to pick these up in person.
- Some local pharmacies will mail prescriptions to the campus post office, where students may pick them up. Students will need to arrange mail order delivery with the pharmacy.
- Refrigerated and controlled substance medications cannot be mailed. Students will need to pick up those medications at the issuing pharmacy.
- Please call for refills when you have 7 days’ worth of medication left so that they can get the prescription filled and mailed out to you before you run out:

- A flu immunization clinic is organized by St. Olaf Human Resources using an outside vendor for employees, staff, and students during the fall semester. It is held on campus in Buntrock Commons. Students will receive emails on cost, dates, and times from HR.
- Flu shots can also be obtained at local clinics and pharmacies. Call ahead to those locations for questions about availability, cost, use of insurance, and age requirements.
